Successful performance on the ISEE or the Independent School Entrance Exam, can be the gateway to an outstanding middle school education for your child. As the entryway for many of the country’s leading private or independent schools, the competition can be fierce, so enrollment in a test preparation program can go a long way towards helping your future middle-school attendee conquer these tests with confidence!
The ISEE is administered at the primary, lower, middle, and upper levels, all of which test the competency of your child under 4 main components: writing, verbal, reading and math. Writing the exam typically takes the average middle school student between 2.5 and 3 hours to complete.
Did you know? For all levels of the ISEE Exam (with the exception of the Primary Level), families can choose to complete an online version of the test.
What is the Difference Between the ISEE and the SSAT?
While both the ISEE and the SSAT tests are comprised of the 3 same components (reading comprehension, vocabulary, and math), there are key differences between both tests that will impact the preparation approach. Below, we highlight the variances in format and structure at the middle school level:
- Reading: SSAT has a greater emphasis upon analogies and synonyms, and ISEE stresses sentence completion
- Writing: SSAT covers a wider variety of genres, the ISEE includes lengthier reading passages
- Mathematics: ISEE places greater importance upon mathematical reasoning emphasis
Prior to enrolling your child within a test preparation program, ensure you have consulted your top choice schools to understand which test is required for admission.

But don’t take our word for it
“I was so nervous about taking the ISEE test for my entrance into middle school. I always freeze up during tests at school, even when I’ve studied a lot. During my ISEE Prep Course, we were given so many great tips for selecting answers and working through problems. I felt so confident going into my ISEE exam and continue to use these skills on other tests. Big thanks to my course teacher, Chris!”
